Yesterday we journeyed west to explore Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. This densely wooded area is renowned for ticks and mosquitos! Prior to our departure, I mixed up an All Natural Bug Spray recipe to put it to the test.
In a spray bottle add 4 oz of Witch Hazel and 2 oz of Vinegar. Next add 20 drops of doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Cedarwood essential oil, 10 drops of Lemongrass, 25 drops of Purify, and 25 drops of Terrashield. Shake before applying.
I got my alcohol free Witch Hazel from a local health foods market. I have found that a 2 oz spray bottle fits perfectly into a purse, diaper bag, or hiking pack, so you may need to halve or quarter the recipe for smaller spray bottles.
I applied this concoction to all of us upon arrival, and only reapplied to myself and my tiny person mid-hike. Initially while mixing it, I was slightly off-put by the aroma, but after spraying, it is light and almost breezy. It lacks the strong alcohol or chemical scent that accompanies store bought brands. Forever the skeptic, I was well equipped with chemical laden store bought brands, but luckily did not need to use them at all!! We accomplished a 5 mile hike and came out completely unscathed!! I was very impressed that even the obnoxious little gnats that like to swarm above your head were not interested in us. Every day the power of these oils continues to impress me!!
Knowing that I am not only keeping myself, but keeping my family safe from harmful chemicals is relieving and empowering. I implore you to investigate environmental contributions for everything from cancer to autism. Our skin is our largest and most absorbent organ – why are we not more concerned with what we are putting on and into our bodies?
